Piano Lessons - You can learn to play piano now only $59/mo (3
month introductory rate)
Independence School of Music teaches piano to students of all age. Our
youngest piano student is age 4. Our oldest beginning piano student is
age 74. She takes piano lessons with us while she waits for her
grandchild to take his piano lesson. She always wanted to learn how to
play piano as a child. They each are learning to play piano each using a
different teacher and a different approach to learning to play piano.
Piano Lessons for the very young child - age 4 to 5 Very young piano students need a piano teacher who understands the
developmental abilities of the pre-school child. The piano teacher for
young piano students must have the patience to work with small children, and
should be trained in the techniques necessary to teach a very young child to
play piano or any musical instrument. A child age four can certainly begin
piano lessons, but if they do not have the right teacher, the child will not do
well, and may not want to continue their piano lessons. A piano
teacher of very young children needs to know how to make changes every few minutes
during the lesson. The teacher will typically not have the child actually reading
music at this very early stage of their piano adventure. Piano
lessons for the small child needs to be fun. The child will think of this
as a playtime activity, and if forced into a ridged traditional piano lesson,
the small child will usually not do well. The piano teacher should use a
lot of different colorful piano teaching aids.
Traditional Youth Classical Piano Lessons - age 6 - how to find a piano
teacher for the serious student
The term "serious" piano student, does not imply that the student is gifted in
any special manner. When we talk about the "serious piano student", we are
referring to an average child learning to play piano with a commitment of the parents, and
a well qualified teacher typically with a master's degree in piano. In all
cases, learning to play piano requires a commitment by the parent, the
child, and the teacher. A young person learning to play piano starting at
about first grade will get the most benefit from a traditional approach to piano
lessons. It is a misconception that the beginning student might just as
well take piano lessons from an average piano teacher and then later if the
child progresses we will find a better teacher.
The parent of the young student needs to start out with the best piano
teacher that the parents can find. Almost all young students love their
piano teacher, and likewise, most piano teachers love children. This is a
prerequisite of a good teacher. However, the parent who has not studied
piano, will find it challenging to know what a great piano teacher looks like.
Children will learn to play piano quite well from any piano teacher given enough
time; and the child will generally enjoy their piano lessons even from a
mediocre piano teacher. However, after 5 to 7 years of study, there will
be no comparison between the progress of a student studying with an average
piano teacher without the commitment of the parents compared to the progress of
a piano student studying under the tutelage of a great piano teacher with
committed parents.
A great piano teacher is going to have a degree in music education, and/or
piano performance; and in most cases will also have a masters degree in piano or
music education. You want to select a piano teacher who has retained
students from first grade all the way through graduation from high school ( or
at least for as long as the teacher has been teaching if less than 10 years).
You want to select a piano teacher who has a rich and structured curriculum of
classical music that their piano students study. Ask the teacher to see
what print music her 5 year students are studying. Ask to see what music
her 10 year students are studying. Ask your piano teacher when he or she
started teaching. Ask how many students she has, and ask how many students
she has retained for at least 6 years, or at least for as long as she has been
teaching. How long is his or her waiting list? A great piano teacher
will have a full schedule. A great piano teacher will have the piano student participating
in several recitals per year, studying a rigorous music theory program as part
of their piano studies, listening to classical piano music as part of their
assignments, attending occasional master class with his or her piano teacher,
and preparing for a individual junior recital or senior recital as they
complete their high school years.
Casual piano lessons for young students Music should be a part of every child's life. Many students will
benefit more from a casual approach to piano lessons, than from a traditional
approach. These lessons will generally be less expensive as well.
The difference between the serious piano student, and the casual piano student
has to do with the goals of the parent, the commitment of the parent, and the
qualifications of the teacher. If your schedule or the schedule of the
child is so busy, that you know you can not sit in on your child's piano
lessons, or if you will miss a lesson because of a sporting event; then you are a candidate for casual piano lessons. If your child
will be too busy to practice every day, or if you are inclined to take the summer off from
piano lessons, then you are a candidate for casual piano lessons. If your child would find
rigorous piano study too stressful, then you may be a candidate for casual piano
lessons.
Piano Lessons for adults
It's true, you are never too old to learn to play piano. An adult piano
student is not going to learn to play piano in a traditional manner, any more
than a very young child will. When an adult decides to study music, he or
she usually has a specific reason for doing so. Here are some typical
reasons why an adult will take piano lessons: I always wanted to play
piano, but my parents could not afford piano lessons". " I would have started
piano lessons sooner, but I was too busy with my work." "I want to study
piano now that I am retired as a way to keep my brain active". "I love
classical music so I want to learn how to play Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach".
" I love to sing, so I want to be able to play some chords on the piano in order
to accompany my singing". " When I listen to the blues it really moves me.
I want to learn how to play some basic 12 bar blues, and eventually learn to
play cover, and play along with some CDs.". "I am interested in the
process of learning to play piano as much as I am interested in the outcome of
playing. I know I will never get good enough to become a professional
piano play, or play out in clubs, but I want to learn enough so that I can get
pleasure out of playing, and I want to enjoy the rigor of learning something
new.".
As an adult when you meet with your piano teacher at Independence School of
Music, you will discuss why you want to take piano lessons, and what you want to
learn. Your piano teacher will give you realistic goals. You may not
even learn to read music music in the beginning. There are many adult
piano method books that are specifically geared toward teaching the adult to
play piano. These books include CDs, and DVDs and will make the process of
learning to play piano much easier and more fun. These modern piano books have the
songs you want to play, and you can be playing right along with professional
musicians on the CDs or piano lesson DVD almost from the first day.
On-line piano lessons
Independence Music does not recommend that you take a totally on-line approach
to learning to play piano. On-line piano lessons can be a supplement to
taking lessons from a qualified piano teacher, but you will find that you are
much more motivated when you have the interactive relationship with a piano
teacher. Moreover, most piano teachers are interesting people. The
difference between piano lessons with a profession piano teacher vs. an on-line
piano lesson program is about the same as the difference between riding a
bicycle in the national park vs. a riding a stationary exercise bicycle in your
basement.
We have thousands of piano books that our teachers will choose
from for your piano lessons, and that are available for direct purchase by any
piano student or piano teacher. We stock dozens of different piano
methods from the old traditional Thompson books that were popular 40 years ago,
to the most modern self-teaching piano books with CD and DVD, including sheet
music, popular music books and more. We have piano books from Bastien
Piano Method,
Alfred Basic Piano, Hal Leonard, Warner, Boston Music Company - BMC, Kjos, and many many
more.
