  • How Long Should I Practice My Music
One of the most asked questions is "How long should my student practice every day"?  It is natural for parents to expect their children to practice their musical instrument if they are taking music lessons, or even if they are just participating in the school band or orchestra. For that matter, some students pick up an instrument on their own and just begin playing it without any instruction.

So how much is enough. Here is an interesting story.

When my son was in 7th grade, he was quite good at the violin and was taking private lessons at The Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland Ohio. His young music teacher, Ginny Lin was a very good teacher, and my son had a crush on her. So he was willing to do whatever she asked.

One day after his lesson, she came out to greet me. I asked her, how long should my son practice his violin each day. Much to my surprise, his violin teacher went on and on about how she was not at all interested in long practices! She instead was only interested in quality practice. Each day when he practiced he must remain focused, and pay attention to the details. It was much more important for him to work over just one or two measures of a violin piece until he had it perfect; than to spend mindless time in practice.

"I see", I told her. So... considering that his practice must be focused, and that quality was much more important than quantity... please tell me, "How long should he practice every day"?.

Her answer: "Since I am only interested in quality practice... two hours a day will be enough".
