At the Independence music studios we teach school age children, and adults learning a musical instrument for the first time. Our recreational music instruction for adults teaches adults who want to learn to play guitar, learn to play piano, and adults who are learning violin and saxophone. There is no prior experience necessary. When I decided to study piano, I was 48 years old. The only requirement to learn a musical instrument as an adult is to be able to allocate 20 minutes a day (one hour is better) to your practice. For me, the study of piano as an adult was as much about the process of learning a musical instrument as it was about the outcome. I read that learning to play a musical instrument exercises a part of the brain that we don't use so much. As an adult piano student, I have much more opportunity to change the direction of our lessons. Since I have no expectations about playing piano professionally, or majoring in music at the university, I find that I if I let my piano teacher know what I want to get done, he will take me there. At my first piano lesson, I brought in a CD of the kind of music that I love to listen to. It was a Katie Webster blues CD. My piano teacher (Craig Reed) asked if I wanted to learn to play cover. I did not know what that meant, so he showed me, and he started playing along with Katie. It was great. He wrote down some chords and began teaching me how to play 12 bar blues. When I had no time to practice during the week, I would suggest that we talk about some nuance such as, "what is the augmented chord" that I saw in the Eagles "When Hell Freezes Over" music books. It was easy to spend 30 minutes learning the music theory behind this question and because we were covering an item that was in one of the songs I was learning, it was more interesting. Sometimes, I would really get into it, and spend hours at the piano, even writing my own music, and then taking it in to my lesson so my piano teacher could help me fix my mistakes or find the notes I was hearing in my head, but could not find on the piano. As time went on, we would move around from blues to ragtime music, to classical music, some Beatles and Eagles, and eventually back to blues. I believe that everyone should learn to play a musical instrument and that music lessons should be fun and affordable.
